That’s right folks, the PS3 is finally starting to turn in to the all in one media device that we always hoped it would be, however I think this is beyond the wildest dreams anyone had when the PS3 was first introduced. Sony released and app to allow people to purchase the DirecTV NFL Sunday Ticket, even if they don’t have DirecTV service. Sure this comes well after Sony released apps for the NFL and MLB, but let’s be honest with ourselves… THIS IS THE FUCKING NFL! Now I personally already have DirecTV & the Sunday Ticket on all TV’s in my house, but this is great for people in rental situations that can’t put up a dish or for people that got suckered in to a bundle contract with their cable company (or cheap bastards like Jason who dropped cable altogether for Hulu and Netflix). All you have to do to get started is download the Sunday Ticket app from the media section of the your XMB. The service will cost $339.95 for non-subscribers, but the great thing is that if you have already have it through DirecTV (like me) you can link up your account to the PS3. So if you want to watch football at your cheapskate friends house on Sunday, and he only has crappy digital rabbit ears, you can just start up the app and put in your login info. Launch video is below:
Hoooray to being cheap!!!
You really are a cheap SOB 😀
I would love Eric to Cancel Service 1 week in just to tease your ass of actual TV. You cheep basterd!
Lol the service actually kinda sucked, but I guess Direct TV was having troubles all over the place. But thankfully I was up at Eric’s to watch the games so I’m fine :p
They had issues with the directv phone app at first last year too. It’s like they know they can make tons of money by making the content streamable, but they make the streaming before they have enough bandwidth to handle the influx of requests. silly companies.
That’s kind of cool except that you have to pay for the Sunday Ticket, and then pay to add your PS3 as a “receiver”. I like the idea that they are trying to follow up with the TV Everywhere concept that all the TV companies are talking about. It’s a concept that I have embraced, so much so that I switched to DISH Network as my TV provider. As an employee I know that their DISH Remote Access app gives me all of my TV channels and DVR recordings on any compatible device, including smart phones and tablets!
Good insight, but you do not have to pay to add your PS3 as a receiver. I’m not a fan of Dish, due to video quality issues that I see for myself, but the big thing about this is that you can watch every football game WITHOUT having to have DirecTV service. DirecTV is aware that some people like dish/cable better, or have to have cable due to their apartment complexes, so they made it so that you can order the Sunday Ticket without being a DirecTV subscriber. So someone like you who, really likes Dish, can still catch every game without having to switch services. The fact that you can use your already purchased product anywhere is is just an extra add on for DirecTV subscribers.
I had remembered reading that there was an additional $50 fee. I just double checked and found http://www.dmwmedia.com/news/2011/08/18/directv-delivers-nfl-to-ps3-and-android.
They may have since changed that requirement. After further reading it seems there have been some big qualitiy issues with the service as well. I didnt know you could use the Ps3 for the Sunday Ticket without having Direct but it is still about $340 right?
Yes, it is $340 but that is actually a little more on the side of the NFL than it is with DirecTV. What people are talking about, in reference to extra money, is if you only get basic Sunday Ticket and not the Super Fan Pack which allows you to do additional viewing on other devices (something that is part of their contract with the NFL). What’s great is that there is now a loophole in the contract that allows other people to watch the games. Sure, DirecTV is still making money off of it, but it’s great news for most people. I don’t blame anyone for not wanting DirecTV service, but even the biggest DirecTV haters have been hating the fact that they couldn’t get the Sunday Ticket with cable. Now their life is complete.
The service is far from perfect as well. Granted its only been two weeks but I have yet to be able to watch a game without frequent streaming problems.
You’re correct Jason, and this is what I would call a perfect example of why I think Digital Content is so far off from being the only thing. Bandwidth limitations, both at the source and the consumer, cause major issues with simultaneous streaming/downloading. Same thing happened day 1 of the PSN being back online, it took me forEVER to do anything in the PlayStation store. Hopefully they fix the minor bugs as the weeks go on, but I know that week 2 was a lot better than week 1. I will say that streaming on my Google Tablet last Sunday was actually really good. I made it through the entire first half of the late games without a single hiccup, until I got back to my comfy seat on my couch.
THE FUTURE IS NOW!!!!
It is great to get some awesome insight from other people though. Thanks a lot Adam Mcroy. Hopefully we continue to get some more information and insight on some of our other articles.
You’re very welcome. Thanks for having me as part of the conversation! While it may or may not be a success, I like the fact that Direct offers something like that. I would like to see something similar from DISH, maybe a movie streaming option. It seems to take a long time for companies to notice consoles. Look at how long it took for Facebook, Hulu and Netflix to hit the PS3 and Xbox.
That is a very good point, however, they are all services that were only available previously on PCs and the move to PS3 and Xbox meant people could enjoy these services on the big screen. Cable, Direct TV and DISH however are already on the big screen, so just bringing them to the PS3 or Xbox will not be enough. If you really want to talk about what will change the game, it will be along the lines of more customization. I would gladly pick up the service again if it was directly available to my PS3 but I got to select what channels were included and only paid for them. I got rid of my cable in the first place because I was tired of paying out my nose every month for 99% garbage and ads, however if I could pick 5 or 6 stations or providers and pay a smaller premium you may just bring me back. I understand that there is a ton of red tape but just giving you an idea that will help you survive in this “cutting the cord” world.
