The PSN will be down for routine maintenance from 8am-8pm PST on 1/17/13. Normally you can just ignore the time and say “darn, I can’t play online during that time”, but Sony is saying something a little different. The PS Blog posted this part earlier today:
- The PlayStation Store and Account Management will not be available during the maintenance period, but you will be able to access online play and apps provided that you have signed into PlayStation Network at some point between now and the time of the maintenance. So please be sure to sign in now if you wish to access the Network during Thursday’s maintenance window.
This would lead me to believe that they are going to flag your system for use during the time if you log in before the shut down. Sure there is a woopty doo about online play, but the big thing is for + members since the “free” games require network validation to play. They haven’t confirmed that this will solve the problem yet, but if you want to play one of the “free” games during that time it might behoove you to turn the PS3 on a little over the next day or so. We will update as more information is known.

This is bull why cant they send us a message ahead of time i dont remember to always check their site just to see maintenance schedule… Oh but if u already signed in ur good what kinda crap is that
Agreed, they should at least try to send out an email to everyone to let them know. Not all PS3 owners follow tech blogs and the Playstation blog.
Or at least a warning pop up next time you log in before all this starts.
