Today and over the weekend we are having an open discussion on your personal great video game moments. Moments that made you feel good or excited that you were able to achieve as a gamer. Let us know what your greatest or most recent moments in gaming in the comments:
Yesterday I had an interesting thing happen to me that I have not thought about in quite some time. While playing Resonance of Fate I ran into a common RPG trap, I walked into a battle that was WAY over my current level. The problem was that I had been playing for a while and had not saved in quite some time, so quitting the game would have deleted all of my progress. For the first time in a long time I finally had to pull out all the stops and really play an RPG with a huge strategy, I haven’t done this since my first time battle with Sephiroth in Final Fantasy VII. (you know when you were not fully expecting the fight and all your characters are not fully leveled)
Once the battle started I knew I was fucked, the enemy was the Level 48 dolled up Dwellest (apparently a tough battle according to Google) and my highest member of my 3 party team was level 8. Thankfully (or unfortunately) the game allows you to restart a battle, rather then just the full GAME OVER when you die but you cannot run away. It took over two hours and countless deaths, I haven’t been this frustrated with a game in a long time, but I stuck it out and tortured myself. I was finally able to trick the guy into only attacking my strongest member by buffing him with a billion positive enhancements I.E. armor and extra attack. I then was able to corner him and constantly heal/attack in order to bring down this asshole bit by bit. And let me tell you what, the wave of satisfaction I had knowing that, not only was I able to beat him, but that it also took everything I had (health potions and modifiers and a lot of time) to do the impossible.
What did I receive? Nothing, nothing but normal items as the game didn’t view it as a boss battle, just a normal fight at level 48. Ha ha ha I’m sure the final boss battle wont be as hard as this either (hopefully). Now two things:
1. Is it annoying when games do this? Should I not have been able to enter this battle without being at a proper level? Or since I came here its my job to get out or die?
2. Am I crazy? should I have just said fuck it and gone on with my life and erased all I had done for that day so far?
Let me know what you think and lets hear your stories.
I’ve had that happen in countless RPG’s and have done the same thing when I could. It shouldn’t be able to happen, but if it does, the game should be able to drop you out before the boss battle. I understand that auto saving isn’t always best for RPG’s, since there are so many choose your own adventure outcomes, but this should be an automatic thing for games. Not just that, but they shouldn’t be spread so far apart all the time too. DragonAge is a perfect example; when I entered the mage circle tower it auto-saved and didn’t save again for about 15 minutes. However, when I’m walking around the Dwarves homeland, it autosaves every time I leave a room almost. It wouldn’t be so bad if it didn’t stop the game for a second or 2 to start the process, but it unfortunately does.
The most recent example of major triumph was probably in FFXIII when I was wandering around Gran Pulse’s main grassland and stumbled in to one of the massive animals when I first got there. I died so many times that I lost count but finally wore one down by doing one fighter and 2 healers the entire time.
ha ha ha those things are such a pain.. Did you ever fight the Giant Cactuar?
Yeah, he was a pain in the ass too!
