Kotaku has posted the above stunning video for Reset, a game described as a “Reset is a single player co-op first person puzzle game with a strong emphasis on story and atmosphere. The unique game mechanic in Reset is the ability to travel back in time to solve puzzles co-operatively, with yourself.” That’s a very odd way to describe a game, and whether it will work well or not remains to be seen, but the big talk right now is how gorgeous the in-game graphics look. Yes, that’s right, that entire video was created using the in-game engine which they even say is pre-alpha so theoretically things can only look better. Lighting and water looks amazing, but they still have some texture mapping and design flaws to figure out to make it look completely realistic. Check out the Reset site for more information
If Portal taught us anything, there is still a market for awesome, heavy story based puzzlers. And I dont understand why its not tapped more often, Shit, its almost impossible to say “Myst” and not have someone cream their pants while saying “I LOVED THAT GAME”. Hopefully this Reset will follow more in that style.
The concept sounds good, but I hope it’s not too good to be true. A single player co-op game where your future self teams up with your past self to solve puzzles is a little bit of a mind fuck. I guess the best way my brain can comprehend it is the clank time clones you use for puzzle solving in A Crack in Time.
There was a Download only game called The misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom, the entire concept was recording your actions so you could interact with yourself, ie record yourself pulling a switch, then move your “real” self over to the trap door and wait for your recorded version to pull the switch. Anyway it didnt work out too well and the game is mostly forgotten. If Reset follows that but in a 3D style it could be fun….or super annoying.
Yup, could be an EPIC score or an EPIC fail. At least it’s gearing up to look pretty while doing one of those two.
