Remember when I told you about a super cool Kickstarter project for the PC? One that has raised over $7.5 million, and is made by the guy who created Wing Commander and the Privateer games? Well he just made a very lengthy blog post detailing how death will work in Star Citizen, as well as character creation and how saves in the single player Squadron 42 will work. You can head over to the blog and read it for yourself or hit Read Moar for the juicy details!

Character Creation: When you boot up Star Citizen/Squadron 42 and create your character, you will be in a first person view looking at a Men’s and Women’s bathroom doors, in which you simply walk through one to choose your gender. You then walk up to the mirror, and wipe away the steam to review your appearance (and continue to do so as you customize it). Then you walk out and up to the Squadron 42 registration desk, and fill in your info (like your name). It is then up to you whether you opt out then and there and enter the private sector, aka the persistent MMO Star Citizen, or play the single player Squadron 42, with the ability to leave at any time, for a fee of course (in game credits that is) that you will pay off in order to be protected and able to dock at UEE facilities. You also name who your beneficiary is, like your son/daughter, Uncle, friend, whoever. More on that later.

Squadron 42 Saves: As far as the single player Squadron 42 portion plays out, you won’t be able to save mid mission, you either complete the mission, or you have to re do it. I imagine a lot of rage inducing moments in the single player game, but also a very rewarding experience.

Star Citizen Death: When your space craft gets destroyed, you will have the opportunity to eject, and should you do this successfully, you will be picked up and returned to your last space port, without your upgrades and cargo, unless you had insurance. However, if you don’t eject in time, do eject but your body or escape pod get’s destroyed, get shot in the head or left for dead during a boarding, you die…temporally. Basically, you loose a ‘life’, and when you loose all your lives, your character really dies, and you attend his or her funeral as your named beneficiary from earlier. As you loose your lives, your character will get scars, or cybernetic limbs, specific to how they died/got injured, showing other people that you have been in some shit. Your beneficiary gets all your shit, you know, because their the only one in your will. Also, they get some of your rep, be it a goody goody or a pirate, but not all of it. This is seen as “My dad is a cop, so people think I’m a good guy” or “My dad was Al Capone.” If your character did anything meaningful, like killed an epic NPC or discovered a star system, it will be noted on his tombstone. And by epic NPC, I mean unique. Major boss characters don’t respawn, ever. You can only kill Al Capone once. That doesn’t mean that area is rid of evil for good. No, because some underling is ready to take his place, but it won’t be the same guy, giving meaning to every boss fight.
