Porter Robinson, an electronic music producer from North Carolina, along with Madeon, a songwriter and DJ from France, collaborated on their first ever single together, titled Shelter. Why am I writing about electronic music on a gaming and anime site you ask? Well, they decided to team up with A-1 Pictures and Crunchyroll to create an anime short for their new single, that’s why, so enough questions ok. For Porter, who also wrote and produced the short, to work with A-1 Pictures on this project has been a dream come true. Just take a stroll through his twitter feed and that much is evident to see. This could easily have been just a glorified music video, but it turns out to be so much more than that. What we get is a well thought out story about a 17 year old girl who has been stuck inside a simulation her father created for her to save her from the end of the world. The story may be told in all of 6 minutes, but it will tug at your heart strings. There isn’t a whole lot of dialog other than that in the song itself, instead it lets the animation tell the story. Megumi Kouno did a great job with the Key Animation, Drawing Direction, and Character Design, and it really shows. Megumi and everyone involved did a great job of letting the animation do most of the talking. The little dialog that is there however, sets up and concludes the story nicely, with the song Shelter playing throughout the middle of the short. The Japanese voice acting of Rin done by Sachika Misawa is nothing short of amazing. Shelter is 6 minutes well spent of your time, and I hope to see more things like this in the future.
