As 2012 comes to a close, and as the PC guy here at IBIF, I decided I’d collect some of the best tech demos released this year, running in real time, on a PC. Don’t worry console gamers, next generation consoles will be close. So join me while looking at these draw dropping graphics. Get a change of pants ready.

First up is nVidia’s tech demo showing realistic fur, amazing destruction, and cloth animation.

Next up is the Crysis 3 tech demo. Why is the Crysis 3 tech demo important? Crysis 1 became THE PC graphical benchmark, and with Crysis 3, Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli said “There are brutal expectations around the PC version of Crysis 3. So this time we promise to melt down PCs.” 2013 will see the beginning of next generation graphics, and this is the game to usher it in, on the PC at least.

Another video showing off CryEngine 3 worth noting is from a demo map available with their free sdk, in which a user with a Core i7-2600 @ 3.4Ghz, 8gb of RAM, and single GTX560 is able to run this beautiful, highly detailed forest. Imagine playing a game like Skyrim with these kind of graphics, oh, and the destruction showed by the nVidia demo wouldn’t hurt either.

Next we have Square Enix’s Luminous Engine tech demo, showcasing CG like graphics in real time. This is what Final Fantasy could very much end up looking like if the PS4 can handle it (this was running on a PC with a single GTX 680, and no specs on what the PS4 will be).

Finally we have the Unreal Engine 4 Elemental Demo, which looks very Diablo-esque to me, but also very CG like.

The time when in game graphics matches CG is upon us, finally. Games are about to get very pretty, and hopefully, better gameplay as hardware is capable of doing more. Now go clean yourself up.
