Attack on Titan doesn’t really need an introduction with it’s huge popularity, but fans will find the live action version to be slightly different. The live action adaption of the manga was created with close collaboration with it’s creator, who wanted the live action movies to stand on their own. Fans of the manga and anime are going to find the films to be much darker than their source material, with the films being closer to horror films. The other major change is how the movies handle the main character Eren. Fans of the anime will recall that his goal is to destroy all of the titans, but in the films he begins not believing in them.

“Fan reaction to Attack on Titan was extremely positive at the world premiere and we’re pleased to be able to announce dates for the theatrical releases in September and October,” said Gen Fukunaga, CEO and President of FUNimation Entertainment. “Attack on Titan is a worldwide phenomenon and we are excited to bring the live action movies to not only fans of the manga and anime but also horror fans as well from across the U.S. and Canada.”

It’s an interesting take on the series, and I look forward to getting to watch it next month.
